THE GREENGRANTS ALLIANCE OF FUNDS AT-A-GLANCE
The Greengrants Alliance is an international alliance of organizations that seek to solve the environmental and social challenges we face by increasing support for grassroots action.
Despite enormous hurdles, dedicated activists commit their time, skills and resources to finding solutions. We help them by providing small but critical financial support for their initiatives. The Greengrants Alliance envisions a world in which local action, awareness and priorities lead to major improvements in social and environment justice.
The Greengrants Alliance was born in 2005 to assist advisors of the Global Greengrants Fund in Brazil and Southeast Asia to establish local funding organizations. Since then, the Greengrants Alliance has grown to five members in Brazil/South America, Canada, Mexico, Southeast Asia and the United States. It also links to a growing number of partners around the world.
Alliance members are:
Both ENDS As the newest member of the Alliance of Funds, Both ENDS supports organizations in developing countries to fight poverty and to work towards sustainable environmental management.
Center for Socio-Environmental Support (CASA) CASA provides small grants in Brazil and South America. It was founded in 2005, building on the ten-year grantmaking experience of the Greengrants Brazil Advisory Board.
Global Greengrants Fund Founded in 1993, Greengrants supports grassroots groups working for environmental justice and sustainability worldwide. Greengrants provides a home and coordination for the Greengrants Alliance of Funds.
The Samdhana Institute Founded in 2001 as a fellowship organization, Samdhana integrated grantmaking into its programs in 2005. It now provides grants to groups in Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, East Timor, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Small Change Fund Founded in 2009, it is enabling grassroots action through small grants in Canada and internationally.
Solidarity in Action Fund (FASOL) FASOL was established in 2007 by advisors of the Greengrants Mexico advisory board. It makes grants to build environmentally and economically sustainable communities in Northwest Mexico.
Over the last five years, Alliance members have channeled over $20 million in grants that have resulted in successful initiatives in over 100 countries. These initiatives have acted on climate change, stopped harmful and destructive industrial practices, reforested and cleaned up polluted areas, provided alternative green income for communities, guided local and national policies and raised awareness of social and environmental challenges.
Working together, and with others who recognize the urgent need to support grassroots action, the Alliance seeks to:
• Increase small grants funding and capacity building support for grassroots organizations
• Advocate for public and governmental support for grassroots action
• Complement funding with capacity and network support for grassroots action
The Alliance is currently headquartered and coordinated by the Global Greengrants Fund in Boulder, Colorado. For more information contact A. Scott DuPree, coordinator, Greengrants Alliance of Funds, at scott at greengrants dot org.
