Because our grantmaking approach is unusual, we encourage you to read the information below before contacting us. We do not have the capacity to accept unsolicited proposals. We only make grants to organizations that have been recommended to us for funding through one of our advisory boards. Our goal is to support small environmental organizations around the world that otherwise would not have access to funding. We have developed a grantmaking model that relies on trusted advisors to identify organizations working in their region or issue area. These advisors—biologists, non-profit managers, lawyers, economists, foresters, journalists, engineers and activist leaders—work together to identify groups and help us allocate our grantmaking funds among them. Our advisors work as volunteers to make recommendations and to provide ongoing mentoring and other assistance to these groups. This approach allows us to avoid the costly process of soliciting and reviewing proposals, which, in turn, allows us to keep our overhead as low as possible and ensure that more funds reach the grassroots. It also allows startup and community organizations that may be unfamiliar with the traditional proposal process to gain access to seed funding. As a courtesy to our advisors we do not publish their contact information. This is ensure that they are not overwhelmed with unsolicited proposals. We apologize for any inconvenience or frustration caused by this policy, but we believe that the limitations of our grantmaking model also are its greatest strength. Our reliance on our advisor network allows us to fill a unique and important niche and support great projects around the world.
