Grantee Javier Villavicencio was presented with the Condé Nast Traveler Environmental Award in October for his work to protect the land and wildlife of the Baja California peninsula.

Javier has been a fisherman all his life, but plans for the world’s largest salt harvesting facility near Punta Abreojos, his sleepy Pacific Coast hometown, roused him to a successful battle against it. He followed this victory by working with Grupo Tortuguero on a campaign to engage his fellow fishermen in protecting endangered sea turtles.

Global Greengrants Fund

Global Greengrants Fund believes solutions to environmental harm and social injustice come from people whose lives are most impacted. Every day, our global network of people on the frontlines and donors comes together to support communities to protect their ways of life and our planet. Because when local people have a say in the health of their food, water, and resources, they are forces for change.
