During the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, three teams from China’s University of Bolton took a journey across the country, creating video, images, and a blog to tell the Chinese story. Their video (click on Team B, Part 04) provides a glimpse into the industrial center of Lanzhou and features Green Camel Bell—a Greengrants grantee. The video also includes a brief interview with the organization’s founder and director, Zhao Zhong, and his Green Map Initiative.
Green Camel Bell (GCB) networks with other student environmental groups in Gansu province, promotes environmental education initiatives, and encourages the development of new environmental leaders. GCB also aims to contribute to the improvement of the increasingly destroyed environment in Gansu, and the surrounding areas of Ningxia and Qinghai.
You can read more about Zhao and Green Camel Bell in this article by Christina Larson which appeared in the Washington Monthly. Mr. Zhao and Green Camel are also featured in the May 2008 National Geographic article on the Yellow River.
Greengrants has been funding GCB and its environmental education initiative since 2004.
