Late September’s and early October’s typhoons and earthquake in the Philippines and Indonesia have resulted in upwards of 1,400 deaths and left thousands more homeless and at risk for illness and disease. Massive landslides in the Philippines seriously damaged food crops, posing additional risks for locals in the months to come.
While relief efforts have reached many with temporary shelter and food, more assistance is urgently needed. Greengrants’ Southeast Asia partner, The Samdhana Institute, is working to reach remote villages and other isolated communities with much-needed funding. They are requesting support for supplies including food, water, blankets, and medicine.
Samdhana’s long history of work in the region and extensive networks with rural villages positions them to effectively channel funds to those who need it most and are in danger of being left out of official relief efforts. While the immediate needs are most vital, Samdhana will also support long-term reconstruction efforts for homes, schools, and infrastructure, as well as ecological restoration to stabilize hillsides and protect clean water supplies.
