Glenn Switkes, a longtime ally of Global Greengrants Fund and estimable activist, passed away last month. Glenn was passionately committed to defending the Amazon rainforest, rivers, and indigenous peoples, and is remembered fondly as “a river warrior with unbreakable passion.” The San Francisco Chronicle published a tribute to Glenn on January 12, 2009.
Glenn contributed to Greengrants in many ways. As Program Director for International Rivers, one of our Global Advisors, he recommended grants that were pivotal in protecting the world’s rivers. Through his own Rios Vivos Coalition, Glenn brought groups into the Greengrants network that fought for indigenous rights and against destructive dams in South America. He also played a key role in sustaining our Brazil Advisory Board, enabling Greengrants to support the transformation of this Board into our Alliance of Funds partner, the Center for Socio-Environmental Support (CASA). His passion and commitment will be greatly missed, and his memory will live on in the movements that he helped to build throughout the continent.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Selma Barros de Oliveira, and their 7-year-old son, Gabriel. A fund has been set up for his son; checks should be mailed to: Selma Barros de Oliveira c/o International Rivers, 2150 Allston Way, Suite 300, Berkeley, CA 94704.
