The East African country of Uganda has verdant hillsides, unique wildlife, and incredibly warm, welcoming people. Yet, deforestation and poor livestock and agricultural practices have degraded the environment; the AIDS pandemic and human rights abuses have devastated communities; and 51% of the population survives on an average daily income of less than US$1.25 per day.
It is a country with great natural beauty and human potential, but the need for grassroots activism to protect its precious resources is even greater. Greengrants has been funding small environmental groups in Uganda for almost ten years, and we are inspired to see that the momentum is building.
Dana Perry, our Grants Manager, traveled to Uganda in May 2010 to attend the Greengrants East Africa Board meeting – an annual gathering of advisors to share strategies and successes. She also had the opportunity to visit some of our remarkable grantees and the communities they are working on behalf of. These are a few of the incredible scenes she captured while there.
