Across Africa, proposed large dams threaten the rivers that millions depend on for drinking, agriculture, fishing, and transportation. EcoDoc Africa is a grassroots group of filmmakers and activists from South Africa who are raising awareness about the dangers of these hydroelectric dams to local waters.
An $11,140 grant enabled several members of EcoDoc to attend Rivers for Life, an international conference in Mexico, and share the experience to build awareness. The conference brought together more than 300 individuals working on dam and river issues: activists, dam-affected people, and grassroots representatives from around the world. There, they shared experiences, ideas and skills, all with the intention of protecting the future of the world’s clean water sources.
After the conference, EcoDoc produced a short film on the event that showed incredible solidarity between attendees from across the world, entitled “Viva Tamaca Viva: We From Africa Salute You” (below).
This kind of collaboration and unity empowers local people to protect the waters they live from.
