The Challenge
Around the world, the territories of Indigenous Peoples are threatened by externally-driven resource extraction, deforestation, development projects and climate change. These threats challenge the ways in which Indigenous communities have lived for centuries, in balance with the habitats and environments they call home.
Now expanding oil extraction, chemical contamination, the construction of roads and hydroelectric dams, a warming world, and the expansion of agribusiness have resulted in the loss of land and resources, chronic illness, as well as challenges to traditional cultures and livelihoods, and the violation of peoples’ rights to a clean and healthy planet.
Our Solutions
Connected to many of these communities by a global network of advisors, we can resource Indigenous Peoples’ efforts to defend their rights. Our grants help activists resist extractive projects, seek legal support, increase awareness of the risks posed by these projects, and advance sustainable economic alternatives. Indigenous Peoples play an important role in the movement to keep fossil fuels in the ground, and protect the planet’s remaining biodiverse spaces and traditional ways of life that honor and respect the environment.
