It is with profound sadness that the Global Greengrants Fund family has watched the destruction in Nepal following the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in 80 years.
Our hearts go out to our grantees, friends, colleagues, and allies who have lost their homes and loved ones. Thankfully, our Nepalese accountant in Colorado was finally able to reach her loved ones in Kathmandu on Monday, and all are safe. But days later, her aging mother is still rushing into the street every time there is an aftershock.
In the days ahead, we will continue to stand in solidarity with Nepal and find ways to support local communities to rebuild.
Many in the Global Greengrants community have asked what you can do to help. Because Global Greengrants is not a relief organization and does not have an advisor in Nepal, other organizations with established networks in the region are better positioned to help communities in need of immediate relief. If you would like to contribute to first response efforts, we recommend the effective, trustworthy groups below.
7 Organizations to Support in Nepal
The need on the ground is huge and your support will be critical in the days ahead. We urge you to support these top-notch organizations.
- Tewa Fund for Women (via Global Fund for Women) – The women’s fund will distribute medicine, water purifiers, masks, and sanitary napkins to people in remote areas, and will support pregnant women and new moms who have been displaced.
- Doctors Without Borders – The Nepal-based staff is assessing needs in Kathmandu and in the Gorka District.
- IDEX – Channeling disaster relief to on-the-ground organizations.
- Help Nepal Network – A global health and education charity run by Nepalis. Funds will be used to get food, water, and tents to remote villages.
- Educate the Children – The small Nepali nonprofit will assist in relief efforts in Dolakha, the Kathmandu Valley, and Rasuwa/Nuwakot Districts.
- Nepal Seeds – The small education, health, and environmental nonprofit will help communities rebuild.
- One Heart World-Wide – The small Nepali nonprofit will dedicate funds to rebuilding health facilities in remote areas.
Our colleague Sadhana Shrestha, executive director of Tewa Nepal Women’s Fund, wrote in an email:
“All well with Tewa family and friends but disaster is huge; loss and destruction is scary. Still aftershocks… It’s still not over. They say it will come again, so we are in fear. All sleeping outside in cars and garden. Please pray.”
