Climate change is arguably the most critical and far-reaching issue facing humanity and our planet. But you might not know it by looking at how much foundations on the whole spend to address it. Across the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe, philanthropy on climate change issues is just 0.8 percent to 2.2 percent of total foundation spending.

The need—and opportunity—to increase philanthropy, particularly to groups working toward climate justice, is enormous.

Climate justice demands action from those who are contributing most to climate change and benefiting from resource depletion: developed countries and multinational corporations. This is the area that is crying out for philanthropic action predicated not on charity but directed towards systemic change.
