Each year Global Greengrants Fund makes over 700 grants to environmental activists around the world, helping to support grassroots initiatives to protect the planet and the rights of the people who call these natural places home. We wish we could share every single story with you. Here are three exciting projects we’ve supported recently.
Tuvalu: Youth on Climate
Nearly every aspect of life on the island nation of Tuvalu has been disrupted by climate change—from food security to public health. 350 Tuvalu Climate Warriors will use $3,300 from the Next Generation Climate Board to host an Intergenerational Dialogue Day—bringing together youth leaders and elders to increase public awareness of climate-related challenges, and to develop an erosion-fighting mangrove planting project.
Chad: Local Communities Take on Big Oil
In Chad, land grabs by oil companies, environmental degradation from oil spills and gas flaring, and conflicts created by diminishing farmland for the indigenous population are threatening the health and livelihood of the people. The Commission Permanente Pétrole Local will use $5,000 to collect information on the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of oil extraction and use the information to protect the rights of local communities.
Chile: Speaking Out for Indigenous Land Rights
The indigenous lands of Mapuche territory in Chile have long been threatened by mining, oil extraction, plantations, and hydroelectric projects. Colectivo de Comunicacion Mapuche Mapuexpress will use $5,000 to give voice to the struggle for indigenous rights by producing radio programs, and hosting a meeting to organize communications for a united effort against human and environmental abuses in the area.
We believe that solutions for lasting change come from people who face challenges to their environments and rights every day. So we support community-based projects that make our world safer, healthier, and more just. To read more about grants we’ve awarded and the groups and individuals who have received them, click here.
