Meet Anicia Jean.
She’s 45 years old and the mother of 3 children: Francelle,18 years old, Franço, 17 years old, and Julie Jean, 7 years old. They call Favette, Haiti home, a small community of just 2000 families. Alone, Anicia Jean takes care of her children who all attend the local community school, just a few kilometers away from the family’s home made of leftover metal and a tarp.
Their home, no more than 8 square meters, was constructed after Hurricane Mathew hit their island of Haiti and destroyed almost everything in its wake, leaving families like Anicia Jean’s without shelter across the island. At least 40 families in Favette lost their homes, and there is no electricity, water, or sewage in the community.
Before the hurricane, Anicia Jean lived in a typical house with five rooms in the community of Favette. Unfortunately, the house was not strong enough to weather the storm.
Thanks to funding from Aveda and Global Greengrants Fund, families like Anicia Jean’s have the opportunity to rebuild. With money raised through the sale of the Light the Way™ candles, new sustainable homes are being constructed in the community, each with a roof rainwater catchment system and a composting toilet. Aveda is also purchasing solar cookstoves for use in the community.
Families in Favette continue to rebuild their homes and their lives, and today you can help. Purchase a Light the Way™ candle, and help people like Anicia Jean rebuild.
