The oppressive systems that exploit the environment globally are the very same systems that disproportionately police, exploit, and murder black and brown people. White supremacy is the root that allows these violent systems to thrive, and we cannot truly achieve environmental or social justice without eradicating systemic racism from our society.
We are outraged by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, and far too many others. Global Greengrants Fund stands in opposition to systems of oppression and global injustices, supporting the fight for the most basic fundamental human right: the right to live.
It is clear that our current system is not working. How can we work towards a future where equality, justice, and the rights of people and our planet prevail?
We believe in the power of grassroots movements and local people to lead the way to a more just and equitable future. We are proud to place trust, decision-making power, and financial resources into the hands of grassroots activists worldwide, including people of color, women, Indigenous Peoples, folks with disabilities, and many others. We believe in elevating voices, in the power of peaceful protest, in resistance, rebuilding, and resilience.
As people flood the streets of major cities across the United States to call for racial justice, we are reminded why our work is so important.
As South African human rights activist Desmond Tutu said, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”
We will not be silent about systemic racism, and neither should you. Speak up for justice. Donate to grassroots funds and legal aid efforts in cities where protests are happening. Let us unite in the fight for people and planet.
Are you an activist in the Black Lives Matter movement? We would love to elevate your voice and share your thoughts on racial justice with our audience. Please send us a private message on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, and our team will be in touch.
