Late September’s and early October’s typhoons and earthquake in the Philippines and Indonesia have resulted in upwards of 1,400 deaths and left thousands more homeless and at risk for illness and disease.
Greengrants’ Pacific Islands Advisory Board, led by Coordinator Toeolesulusulu Cedric Schuster, is appealing for funds to support long-term reconstruction efforts following September’s earthquake and tsunami that devastated a large swathe of southern Samoa.
Yesterday we heard from Cedric Schuster, Coordinator of Greengrants’ Pacific Islands Advisory Board, who lives in Samoa. Cedric was in Boulder, Colorado last week for Greengrants’ Global Advisor Retreat. Just after he returned home, the September 29th earthquake and tsunami hit, devastating southern Samoa where about 20 percent of the population resides.
The Center for Socio-Environmental Support (CASA), the Brazilian member of the Greengrants Alliance of Funds, is supporting effective action and ways of life that are already making a difference. Though often obscured by economies of scale, these movements are cooling the planet and building the foundation for a more sustainable economic model the world needs to survive the future.
For the small-scale Indian farmer, the organic choice is simple: either adopt more wholesome, healthful means of farming, or continue monoculture methods that endanger human, social, and environmental health. While the answer seems obvious, there are enormous obstacles to gathering accurate information and funding, and to building capacity and political will.
