The Challenge

Central Asia—made up of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan—has historically been a crossroads where people, goods, and ideas from different parts of the Eurasian continent have converged. However, the region’s natural ecosystems are degrading due to increases in raw material extraction, which also causes intensive pollution. Against this backdrop, environmental movements in the region are under threat due to rising official pressure and a significant decrease in funding sources.

Our Solutions

Our Central Asia Advisory Board, officially formed in 2024, provides critical resources to environmental movements in the region. Comprised of environmental justice experts, the board supports groups who are fostering solidarity among grassroots organizers within the region, advocating against polluting industries, educating people about climate justice, and more.
